One Canonsburg police officer is dead and another is being treated at a Pittsburgh hospital after they were “ambushed” and shot while responding to a domestic call this morning.
The suspect in the case, Michael Cwiklinski, is dead, KDKA reported, as is a pregnant woman found inside a home.
What we know
At a press conference this morning, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka said “upon their arrival” at a residence on Woodcrest Drive at 3:19 a.m. “the two officers were ambushed” and shot.
Police and SWAT Teams were searching for the suspect Thursday morning. Police evacuated residents in the immediate area, and Bondarenka urged residents of the surrounding community to stay in their homes.
The suspect was later found dead, according to KDKA:
Shortly after 9 a.m., officials confirmed that Cwiklinski had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A pregnant woman inside the home is also dead.
Police were not able to confirm that information at a press update just after 11 a.m. But Bondarenka said, “We are confident there is no ongoing threat to the public.”
The Washington County coroner later identified the female victim as 28-year-old Dalia Sabae, who was married to Cwiklinski.
Canon-McMillan School District was not in session today.
Late Thursday morning, the Washington County coroner identified the deceased officer as 52-year-old Scott Bashioum. Officials said Bashioum had been with the Canonsburg police for seven years.
District Judge David Mark, of Canonsburg, told the Post-Gazette he knew Bashioum and described him as “a great guy, top to bottom. One of the best people I know inside and out.”
The other officer, identified as James Saieva, is being treated at Allegheny General Hospital. Saieva underwent surgery and is in “stable condition,” Bondarenka said.
