Sure, a bouquet of flowers is always nice, but it’s better when you artfully arrange it.

And chocolates are certainly sweet, but when they’re paired with beer — now, that’s a match made in heaven.

And a card from Hallmark will never compare to a handwritten letter.

Here’s where to find all of those things — and more — in Pittsburgh this month. Whether you’re celebrating with a sweetie, celebrating being single or celebrating friends, think creatively this Valentine’s Day with these quirky celebrations, so your Feb. 14 doesn’t look like this.


Pen a handwritten love letter

With a nod to the art of a handwritten love letter, Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh is turning its postcard station into a love letter writing station. Anybody (not just hotel guests) can pen a note and drop it in the designated mailbox for the hotel to stamp and send. Look for nice stationery, fountain pens and books of love poems for inspiration.

Say “Happy Valentine’s Day” with a little snark

At this 21+ MAKEnight, you pick the sentiment: Snarky or scandalous. Make a bath bomb, sing karaoke, indulge in a chocolate fountain, practice sassy cross-stitching and make themed crafts. As the museum says: "Roses are red, violets are blue, make your own Valentine, because I'm not going to."

Celebrate the season of love at Sex, Love, and Science

At this Carnegie Science Center 21+ Night, learn about the science behind sex and the human body. The evening features speed dating, lessons in scents believed to have an aphrodisiac effect and a chance to meet with experts "who are happy to discuss the kinds of questions you've always been afraid to ask." Plus, live music and cash bars.

Attend ‘A Sweetheart Soiree’ burlesque show

The Smokin' Betties Burlesque troupe will present "A Sweetheart Soiree" featuring special guests Ace Phoenix, Amoxie Villain, Butterfly and Costa Lottabucks. Performing together for for four years, the Betties — consisting of DemDare Eyes, Gigi Coudray, Lucy LaBam, Luna LaCreme, Midnight Mame, and Violet Corbeau — are lighting up the Pittsburgh burlesque scene with their eclectic talents and salute to the female form.

Go all out for Galentine’s Day: Ladies celebrating ladies

As Leslie Knope says, it should be a national holiday. Galentine's Day is all about ladies celebrating ladies. Pop Craft's Galentine's Day fete will feature DIY sugar scrubs, watercolor quotes, leather friendship charms and girl power cards.
