New this month in Pittsburgh: A cigar lounge, a food truck park, a restaurant made for carnivores and cocktails in pouches, like a grown-up Capri Sun.
On the horizon, look for a new Richard DeShantz concept and so many sweet treats — pies, bread pudding, and “things made with lots of butter.”
Here’s what’s new for this month (and what you might have missed last month).
Brugge on North, North Side
Brugge on North is officially open, located in the spot where Casellula at Alphabet City used to be on Pittsburgh’s North Side. It’s the newest restaurant from the owners of the Point Brugge Cafe and Park Bruges, which will serve a similar menu to the other two restaurants, Good Food Pittsburgh reports.
BURN by Rocky Patel, North Shore
After the initial hiccup of not being able to smoke inside, this cigar club is operating at full capacity on the North Shore. The 6,300-square foot space with an 800-square foot patio is BURN’s second location, with the first located in Naples, Fla. Expect a nightclub vibe with oversized leather furniture and low lighting. For cigar aficionados, personal cigar lockers are available for purchase.
Coughlin’s Law Kitchen and Ale House, Mount Washington
This casual pub boasts an extensive beer list and a solid menu (check out the waffle BLT on the brunch menu).
Federal Galley Beer Garden, North Side
Federal Galley’s dog-friendly beer garden patio features a mobile bar with beer, canned wine and pouched cocktails. Stop by for food (like this Detroit-style pizza), plus there’s live music every Thursday.
Fogo de Chao, Downtown
A Pittsburgh location for the super-popular all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse has opened, so you’re gonna want to prepare for the meat sweats.
Pauline’s Caribbean Soul Cuisine, North Side
This family-owned Caribbean restaurant is serving up dishes like jerk chicken and seafood rice along Federal Street.
Pittsburgh Food Truck Park, Millvale

Spring Hill Brewing, Spring Hill
Spring Hill Brewing is serving up pastorally inspired beers inside a century-old Workingmen’s Beneficial Union hall nestled in a grassy patch above Pittsburgh. The plans have been in the works since 2012 when an unlikely partnership blossomed. For Four One Brew, we sat down with the team behind the brewery for an inside look.

Fish Nor Fowl, Garfield
Another concept from DeShantz (the restauranteur behind Butcher & the Rye, Meat & Potatoes, Tako, Pork & Beans, and Poulet Bleu), Fish Nor Fowl is slated to open soon in the former Salt of the Earth spot, Pittsburgh Magazine reports. Though an exact opening date hasn’t been announced, DeShantz offered a sneak peek on Instagram.
Molinaro Ristorante, Downtown
Seafood restaurant Poros is being turned into Molinaro Ristorante with a “high-end Italian approach,” per the Business Times. It’s set to open in early June in one of the most prominent locations in the city, between Market Square and PPG Place.
Pie for Breakfast, Oakland
The building’s “coming soon” sign has tantalized Oakland passersby for years. But it’s finally happening. Pie for Breakfast, which will offer a lot more than just pie for breakfast, is finally opening in mid-May. In an interview with Next Pittsburgh, Chef Trevett Hooper describes the spot like this: “Imagine if a truck stop and a European coffee shop had a baby. That would be Pie For Breakfast.”
TBSP, Mt. Oliver
Modeled after culinary incubators like the Strip District’s Smallman Galley and New York’s Hot Bread Kitchen, four bakers in residence will sell baked goods at the TBSP storefront in Mt. Oliver Borough, with a tentative opening date set for mid-May. TBSP’s inaugural cohort of bakers in residence features a sweet-and-savory expert, a sourdough artisan and a pretzel pro.
New concepts at Smallman Galley, Strip District
Two new dining concepts are coming to restaurant incubator Smallman Galley in June. Joey Hilty, owner of The Vandal, will debut “Joey’s,” a modern European cafe concept featuring simple, ingredient-driven dishes. Phill Milton, sous chef at fl.2, will also introduce a menu of comfort dishes at the aptly named “Home.” Good Food Pittsburgh has the rundown on what to expect on the menus.
Btw, while you’re there, you’ve got to try one of Smallman Galley’s new cocktails, inspired by the flavors of childhood, like Mountain Dew Code Red, Froot Loops, and pizza rolls.

- Insomnia Cookies, which was supposed open in summer 2017 on the South Side. After a year of mystery (and griping from The Incline staff), it’s set to open this summer, a spokesperson said May 1.
- A permanent location for Spork Pitt in Bloomfield
- A Penn Brewery taproom is coming to Downtown, but it’s still pretty far into the future
- East End Brewing pub conversion in Larimer, with charcuterie and other delicacies from Morcilla’s Justin Severino
- A Cinderlands brewpub in the former Spaghetti Warehouse building in the Strip District, where demolition is already underway
- A new, TBA concept from the Big Burrito group in the Waterworks plaza
- Siempre Algo (translation: “always something”) with a seasonal contemporary American menu on East Ohio Street in the North Side
- A Mexican-Italian fusion in the Strip District in partnership with Edgar Alvarez, of Edgar’s Best Tacos
- Bridges and Bourbon, a concept with small plates from chef David Racicot, in the former Seviche space Downtown.
Jabo’s Smoque House and Saloon, Bloomfield
This barbecue joint closed after about a year in Bloomfield. It now sits vacant next to the also shuttered Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, and the Post-Gazette reports that it’s being marketed as “a turnkey business for a brewery, themed restaurant, caterer, sports bar or entertainment venue.”
As we mentioned, this Greece-inspired seafood restaurant has closed its doors. It opened in 2015 in the heart of Downtown, and Molinaro Ristorante will soon fill the location.
