Update, Sept. 23: Meet the winner of the Ultimate Pittsburgh Pierogi Bracket
Voting for this round is now closed.
In the end, it wasn’t the restaurants or the pierogi makers with unusual fillings that rose to the top — it was the most classic type of the beloved Pittsburgh dumplings: church pierogies.
Nominators praised them for authenticity and taste, and thousands of voters agreed.
In the championship round of the Ultimate Pittsburgh Pierogi Bracket, presented in partnership with KDKA-TV and the Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival, it’s Epiphany of Our Lord vs. St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church.
After this round, we’ll crown the winner at the Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival, 1 to 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at Kennywood Park. (Get tickets for the festival here.)
Here’s a look at how they did:
- Once again, Epiphany of Our Lord was in the most voted-in race and received the most votes. In the Final Four and the Elite Eight, Epiphany also earned the highest percentage of votes. The Monessen church won over Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carnegie with 72 percent of the vote.
- The race was closer for St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church which topped Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church in Ambridge with 54 percent of the vote. This was the closest race of the entire bracket for the Brighton Heights church, which previously advanced with winning percentages in the 60s.
