A hoppy, citrusy coffee bean IPA will soon be on sale at 55 Sheetz stores across Pennsylvania, Sheetz announced during a kickoff event in the South Side tonight.
Project Coffee Hopz, a limited-edition brew in collaboration with Rusty Rail Brewing, is Sheetz’s first foray into craft beer. The beer is brewed with Sheetz Brothers Sumatra coffee beans, though the coffee flavor isn’t overpowering.
“It’s the result of a kick-ass partnership between Rusty Rail Brewing and Sheetz,” said Ryan Sheetz, the company’s associate vice president of brand strategies.
A small-batch craft beer, Project Coffee Hopz will be available later this month while supplies last and will not be restocked once it sells out.
For Sheetz, a family-owned-and-operated business founded in Altoona, finding the right brewery partner was key, the company said.
“We wanted to find somebody who not only had PA roots but somebody who shared the same commitment to quality and innovation that we do, and we found that perfect partner in Rusty Rail,” Sheetz said about the Mifflinburg-based brewer.
Sheetz and Rusty Rail announced the collaboration at J. Verno Studios in a super Sheetzy event that included a grand product unveiling, Sheetz-themed Jenga, a Sheetz photobooth, and plenty of Sheetz food (or “eatz,” if you will).
While the event focused on this beer specifically, the product introduction sheds light on Sheetz’s “fight to free the beer in PA” dating back more than a decade, Sheetz said.
“Not that long ago, our state was stuck in these nonsensical Prohibition-era laws that disadvantaged our customers and ultimately prevented us from delivering the ultimate convenience to them,” he said. “Over the last 15 years, we have been fighting to free the beer, and I am so excited that all of that work has led us to this moment.”
“I’m even more excited knowing that our customers are out there across the state getting beer in the most convenient and responsible way possible by making that Sheetz run with an added beer run on top.”
